Burano is one of the beautiful lagoon islands to the north-east of the city, lying out beyond Murano but easy to get to on the regular water bus. Whilst Murano is celebrated for its glass creations, Burano is a more low-key island with beautifully painted houses along the canal banks. As with the city, there are lots of tourist stops for drinks and food, but a few stand out. We went to Al Gatto Nero [the Black Cat], on a recommendation. Without booking we were inside but, as it absolutely poured down during lunch, it was the right choice. Good food, wine and company. It’s fish, fish, fish.
