Italy in September. We’ve arrived on the first stage of the Big Holiday in Italy. Two weeks, the first walking leisurely from Spoleto to Assisi mostly along the St Francis way, then 5 heavenly nights at Buonanotte Garibaldi. Early flight then train from Roma to Spoleto. What a find – a magic small town with a superabundance of great local restaurants. We initially booked Apolilinare online, but was almost immediately cancelled by them. No matter, we could have chosen almost any of the dozen or so we strolled past. To be fair, the Apollinare building was covered in scaffolding…

We had a couple of beers at Caffé Degli Artisti in Piazza Mercado before dinner. At 7:30, just as the bar was thinking of reclaiming tables to set for dinner large groups kept arriving – parents and children for an evening aperitif – the children immediately bringing out playing cards and getting stuck in. We had eaten a perfectly acceptable meal at the hotel last night, complete with a couple of glasses of Sagrantino – the local Umbrian red grape, but tonight was carefully chosen. 

Il Tempio – you go through a dark, traditional Italian restaurant, up the stairs, through another couple of rooms, down the stairs…and out into a delightful courtyard – open on one side to the street – Piazza Pietra Fontana. Soon the place is full, and we only booked the night before. We have the fish tasting menu. Fabulous. After some little amuse we have [from their menu on the day]:

So a stunning fixed price meal for a very modest 40 Eu. Unlikely to be beaten.
