Beautiful though Scampston Hall is, it’s the walled garden that’s first on the list. Designed by the renowned Dutch landscape architect, Piet Oudolf, and featuring modern, perennial meadow planting alongside more traditional areas, the garden is open to the public from Easter to October every year.
The design of the garden is excitingly contemporary, with waves of grasses complementing the formality of box and yew hedging, all set within the more formal borders which surround the garden. There’s a cafe and plant sales by helpful, knowledgable staff and you can always walk around the extensive grounds of the Hall – different but beautiful.
