The Old Pharmacy, Bruton

We’re in Bruton. We should have been here two and a bit years ago but, you know, stuff intervened. TGP to be exact. Since then Bruton has become, you know, the hip place to be. Man. Lots of nice cafés with eccentric wine lists, foodie shops and restaurants. Osip (with a sparkling new Michelin Star) and its sister place, The Old Pharmacy (ToP) are right up to date. ToP serving a short list of achingly trendy small plates (they’ll come in the order the restaurant decides) and Osip dispensing with the menu altogether I.e. you’ll get what you’re given. To be fair, that’s how we like it. ToP follows along from our trips the day before to The Beckford Bottle Shop (small, achingly trendy small plates) and Oak, veggie through and through.

We’ve experienced the full range of home grown seasonal produce – celeriac, beetroot, Jerusalem artichoke, broccoli, potatoes – livened up with almonds and smears (you know what we mean). Still, very, very enjoyable and practically fat and guilt free. Most were even vegan.

ToP started out as the antithesis of Osip next door – simple, random, casual vibe – but now they’re taking bookings. The London ‘walk in’ has made way for convention. Good thing too on a very wet Wednesday in a very small village – we didn’t want to set out looking for a pub in the next village.
