We’re getting old. We’ve been to their place in Pimlico and now we’re in Bristol. Edgy? Is that a sign of old age? Zoologie in Bordeaux could be similar, if a little smarter. First time in Bristol À deux, one of us having been a few times on business (yes, quite a while ago). A 7.5hour journey from the fragrant fields of North Yorkshire via two bad crashes on the M1 adding over three hours to the journey. Bristol – all very reminiscent of Liverpool; slave trade and all that.
We spend Saturday in Clifton, before the wedding we’ve travelled to join, admiring the architecture and trying not to think of the two suitcases full of male body parts someone was trying to drop into the water from the bridge a week or so ago. We visit the famous coloured houses – allegedly first started by architect George Ferguson, also mayor of Bristol, at the time, and Past President of the Royal Institute of British Architects. Knew a bit about buildings, then.
Extremely friendly place to stay. Very comfortable, great beer, good food with lots of freebies (horrible word…Ed) and splendidly sustaining breakfasts.

…and a shout out for the Gloucester services on the M5. Smart, clean, friendly, minimal signage, local produce – simply great. Why aren’t all services like this????
