So, Islay is world famous for its whiskies. In particular it’s peated whiskies, so reminiscent of a tablespoon of TCP. Still, many people love Laphroaig along with the products of its neighbours Lagavulin and Ardbeg. To be fair not all of Islay’s whiskies are so heavily flavoured with peat but it is a strong feature. So, out of all the distilleries on Islay, we chose the Uisge experience at Laphroaig. You need fine weather, as this involves a long, strenuous assault on the hills, searching the elixir that is the spring water, and cutting the peat that gives the whisky its distinctive taste.
‘Start by taking a journey through the full production of the distillery beginning with our traditional malting floors.
Gather your picnic lunch and walking boots and hike out to explore the surrounding landscape, visiting the Kilbride water source, an essential element to make Laphroaig. Appreciate the view from this beautiful setting while you enjoy your delicious lunch.
Hike back to the Distillery to sample a selection of handpicked single casks in Warehouse No.1, our oldest and traditional Warehouse. Conclude your day by hand bottling your favourite to take home.’

…and we stayed at Glenegadale House. ‘Superb attention to detail’. Extremely comfortable and friendly, great breakfasts, dinner some nights and all you could ever wish to know about Islay’s whiskies. And, for those enthusiasts, the place where the first Land Rover was launched to the public. In the dining room, no less. Honest! It’s an absolute must…
